Bridge Replacement

MI Engineering staff members have many years of experience designing cored slab and box beam replacement bridges for NCDOT Bridge Management Unit. Example projects highlighting recent staff experience are shown below.

North Carolina Moving Ahead (Western North Carolina)

Beginning in 2003, MI Engineering staff working at Ko & Associates were selected by NCDOT Bridge Management to oversee the replacement of approximately 50 bridges in divisions 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14 as part of the North Carolina Moving Ahead program. The projects included oversight of the entire replacement process, from initial planning documents to completion of construction.

The structures were designed quickly and efficiently utilizing NCDOT BMU standard cored slab designs. Substructures of all types were employed according to site conditions.

TIP Bridge Replacements (NC Statewide)

MI Engineering staff also designed dozens of TIP bridge replacements for NCDOT through limited service contracts while at Ko & Associates. Each project was unique, from simple structure replacements to complex re-alignments, property disputes, environmental complications, and staged construction.

In some cases, NCDOT standard cored slab designs were updated to comply with the new LRFD code requirements and heavier North Carolina permit loads. Standardized design spreadsheets and Microstation templates accelerated delivery time without sacrificing accuracy or quality.

Having the design engineer present at pre-bid meetings to answer contractor questions minimizes confusion and streamlines the construction process.

Emergency Bridge Replacements

Our experience with fast track projects comes in handy when speed is critical to the client. We can coordinate traffic control design and alternate routes while designing an economical solution and developing high quality bridge plans and contract documents.

When flooding washed out an interior bent under bridge #100 in Cleveland County, NCDOT needed a solution - fast. MI Engineering staff, working for Ko & Associates, developed a plan for replacement that would minimize the period of disruption for local traffic. The new structure was in place and open within 4 months after the collapse.
